Chhath Pooja is an important festival worshipping and dedicated to Sun God by the devotees for the wellbeing of their family, development and prosperity of their offspring mainly in Northern India and the country Nepal. Chhat Pooja is a festival celebrated for four days which occur after Diwali. It has significance from Vedic Times as Sun is the God of energy and by virtue of him the Earth is getting the needed energy for sustaining both non living and living beings on the Earth.

The First day of the Festival known as Nahay Khay, and on this day People take a holy dip in a nearby water body or river, and have only a single meal, i.e. Kaddu-Bhat.

The second day, Kharna, devotees observe fast even without water (Nirjala) for the whole day i.e., from sunrise to sunset. They break their fast after worship of the Sun God, in the evening with kheer, puris, and fruits. After breaking the fast, they again go for fast without water for the next 36 hours.

The third day, Sandhya Arghya which is the main day of Chat Pooja festival, devotees  perform  Sandhya Arghya to the setting Sun at the riversides by continuing the full day fast. On the night they lit Clay diyas (lamps) and celebrate by singing folk songs praising Chhati Maiya, representing  Pancha Tatvas (Earth, Air, Water, Fire & Space). Fasting continues for the whole night also.

On the fourth day, Usha Arghya,  devotees perform Usha Arghya  to raising Sun God along with family members and friends at the river sides. On this day, devotees end their long 36 hour fasting by accepting Chhat pooja prasad.

As per legends, Chhat Pooja was celebrated by Goddess Sita in Ramayana and Queens Kunti & Droupadi in Mahabharata.

This year, the Chhat Pooja celebrated from 8 November to 11 November 2021
